Benefits of CBD oil

1. Reduction of anxiety

CBD may be able to help with anxiety management. Researchers believe it may alter the way brain receptors react to serotonin, a chemical related to mental health. Receptors are small, cellularly bound proteins that receive chemical messages and help cells respond to different stimuli.

One study found that a dose of 600 mg of CBD helped individuals with social anxiety to give a speech in public. Previous animal studies have shown that CBD could help relieve anxiety through effects that include:

– stress reduction
– decrease in the physiological effects of anxiety, such as an increase in heartbeat
– Improvement of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
– sleep induction in subjects suffering from insomnia

2. Anti-epileptic effects

CBD has been mentioned in the past as a possible treatment in cases of epilepsy. Research in this field is still in its infancy. At the moment, researchers are testing the amount of CBD needed to reduce the number of epileptic seizures and verify its safety. The American Society Against Epilepsy argues that research on cannabidiol represents a hope for people suffering from epileptic seizures, and that research is already underway to understand how to use it safely.

In 2016 a study was conducted on 214 people suffering from epilepsy. The study subjects added a daily oral dose of 2 to 5mg of CBD to the anti-epileptic drugs they were already taking. The researchers monitored the study subjects for 12 weeks, noting any unwanted side effects and the frequency with which epileptic seizures occurred. Overall, there was a 36.5% decrease in epileptic seizures in the study participants. Nevertheless, even serious adverse effects were found in 12% of the subjects.

3. Neuroprotective effects

Researchers are studying a brain receptor to understand how CBD can help people with neurodegenerative diseases, disorders that cause the gradual deterioration of the brain and nerves. This receptor is known as CB1.

Researchers are studying the use of CBD oil for the treatment of:

– Alzheimer’s disease
– multiple sclerosis
– Parkinson’s disease
– Strokes

CBD oil may also help to decrease inflammation which may induce worsening of neurodegenerative symptoms. Further research will be needed to fully understand the effects of CBD oil on neurodegenerative disorders.

4. Pain-relieving effects

The effects of CBD oil on brain receptors may also help to relieve pain. Several studies have shown that hemp can offer some benefits when taken after chemotherapy treatments. Other preclinical studies sponsored by the American National Institutes of Health are also investigating the role of hemp in alleviating symptoms caused by it:

– arthritis
– chronic pains
– pain resulting from multiple sclerosis
– muscle aches
– spinal cord injury

The use of Nabiximols (Sativex), a drug for the treatment of multiple sclerosis consisting of THC and CBD, has been approved in the UK and Canada for the treatment of pain caused by multiple sclerosis. However, researchers believe that the CBD contained in the drug may contribute more with its anti-inflammatory properties than directly acting as a pain reliever. Clinical studies will be needed to determine its true validity as a pain-reliever.

5. Anti acne.

The effects of CBD on receptors in the immune system may help reduce general inflammation in the body. In turn, CBD oil could offer benefits for the treatment of acne. Research conducted on human subjects, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, found that the oil prevented normal activity of the sebaceous glands. These glands are responsible for producing sebum, a natural oily substance that is used to moisturize the skin. An excess of sebum can, however, promote the appearance of acne.

Before considering using CBD oil for the treatment of acne, it is advisable to consult your dermatologist. To understand the potential benefits of CBD on acne, further studies on human subjects will be needed.

6. Treatment of Cancer

Some studies have investigated the role of CBD in preventing the growth of cancer cells, but research in this field is only just beginning. The U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) claims that CBD could relieve cancer symptoms and side effects of cancer treatment. However, the NCI does not give full approval for the use of hemp for the treatment of cancer. The properties of CBD that are considered encouraging are those related to its ability to reduce inflammation and alter the way cells reproduce. CBD has the effect of reducing the ability of certain types of cancer cells to reproduce.

How to use CBD oil

CBD is extracted from hemp plants in the form of oil or powder. The extract can then be mixed with creams or gels. These can be put into capsules and taken orally, or spread on the skin. Nabiximols, a drug against multiple sclerosis, is taken orally by liquid spray. How CBD is used depends largely on the purpose of its administration. Consult your doctor before use. CBD oil has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for any medical use, and may have side effects.
